A Psalm of David
39 I said, I will take heed to my ways, that I sin not with my tongue: I will keep my mouth with a bridle, while the wicked is before me.
2 I was dumb with silence, I held my peace, even from good; and my sorrow was stirred.
3 My heart was hot within me, while I was musing the fire burned: then spake I with my tongue,
4 Lord, make me to know mine end, and the measure of my days, what it is: that I may know how frail I am.
5 Behold, thou hast made my days as an handbreadth; and mine age is as nothing before thee: verily every man at his best state is altogether vanity. Selah.
6 Surely every man walketh in a vain shew: surely they are disquieted in vain: he heapeth up riches, and knoweth not who shall gather them.
7 And now, Lord, what wait I for? my hope is in thee.
8 Deliver me from all my transgressions: make me not the reproach of the foolish.
9 I was dumb, I opened not my mouth; because thou didst it.
10 Remove thy stroke away from me: I am consumed by the blow of thine hand.
11 When thou with rebukes dost correct man for iniquity, thou makest his beauty to consume away like a moth: surely every man is vanity. Selah.
12 Hear my prayer, O Lord, and give ear unto my cry; hold not thy peace at my tears: for I am a stranger with thee, and a sojourner, as all my fathers were.
13 O spare me, that I may recover strength, before I go hence, and be no more. (KJV)
Our Father,
We are but sojourners in this life and our days are but a breath in your eternal reckoning yet you are there for us every day and all of the way. It is in the promise of your Kingdom and the life to come through faith in your Son Jesus that we are given hope and meaning in this life.
By your Holy Spirit O Lord, deliver us from our transgressions and help us to guard our ways. Inspire us continually to bridle our tongues and speak only good to others; help us to be silent when our thoughts would bring forth needless judgment and words of anger.
Teach us to be humble and not go the way of the world in arrogance. What are we anyway in the vast space of your universe and how small are we in your creation? We are but a shadow and our days are few and fleeting in comparison to the movements of the great stars and planets. The enemy tells us that we are nothing; yet that is a lie since you continue to pay attention to us and through your Son Jesus we have actually been adopted into your family.
The enemy says that your creation and our very existence are just accidents. He says that your Word does not exist and the ancient writings we respect are on ‘wrong side of history’; he proclaims through his minions that there are no objective rules in this universe and we are free to do what we want since this life is all there is. He continues to be the father of lies.
But through the presence of your Holy Spirit we are convinced that this life does have meaning and your promises are sure and your joy continues to give us hope and strength. We are convinced that we will see you on the throne in your Kingdom and rejoice in the life to come as we live in your hope and blessings in this life. Thanks to your Son Jesus Christ we will be saved for all eternity and we will live to see stars and planets pass away and new worlds created and born.
We will also live to see the Kingdom of God come to the earth and we shall meet with our Lord Jesus in the clouds and dwell with him on the earth. Then we shall see every knee bow and every tongue confess that he is Lord of all to your glory.
In Jesus name, Amen.
